Using a router and having IP addresses configured automatically on a local network

Advantages

• Usually allows for internet access, if required
• Default settings are often OK
• The nearest to plug and play you can get with networks
• Makes it easy to add additional units as you will have at least 2 extra Ethernet ports spare free at this point
• Internet and WiFi options usually come as part of the package

Disadvantages

• Upfront cost is higher than a simple switch or cable crossover
• Assigned IP numbers may occasionally change
• May conflict with IP addresses on wider networks if connected to them
